Making Math a part of a Life at Home

Making Math a part of a Life at Home

Admin October 29, 2021

According to Laura Overdeck, the founder of Bedtime Math Foundation studies show that a child’s math skills at the start of kindergarten are a better predictor of future academic success than reading skills, social skills, or the ability to focus.

Thus, it is never too soon to help children get comfortable with math concepts like measuring and counting at home.

Read on for tips on how to make math a part of activities at home.

Cook & measure

It is impossible to cook without using math. You can start by counting the ingredients, for example, when making sandwiches, 1 loaf of bread, 5 eggs, 3 tomatoes, 3 cucumber and so on. If the child is up for bigger challenges, ask them what quantities would be required to double or half the recipe. Or even predict how many sandwiches can be made.

Exercise and count

Organize a sports ‘event’ at home and count your steps or your cartwheels! Measure how much you can lift, or how far you can throw the ball. You can even introduce the concepts of units and make measuring fun. Make sure to take notes as you measure and count.

Build as you add

Any building toys are great for bringing numbers and spatial thinking into playtime. Big or small, any project that involves building and stacking involves adding. Try building a small tent or dungeon out of boxes or even a real tree house outside!

Eat & count

Dinner can involve plenty of math concepts. Let your child help you set up the table and count plates and pieces of cutlery and napkins needed. Let them set them in proper sets for each member.

Learn shapes at bedtime

Help your child to recognize shapes in everything they do. Continue that during bedtime and ask them to find shapes in the books and stories they read.

All in all, make math fun, engaging and rewarding to help your child fall in love with math.
